Resolution in Support of Jeffco Public Schools

Bond Issue and Mill Levy Override on November 8, 2016 Election Ballot

WHEREAS, members of the Board of Directors of the Apex Park and Recreation District have received information from the Yes on 3A • 3B campaign committee regarding the current state of Jeffco Public Schools; and,

WHEREAS, the information received outlines the state of the school district’s facilities, the goals of the school district’s 2020 Vision strategic plan for student achievement and the funding expected from the state of Colorado to meet the needs of our thriving students; and,

WHEREAS, the Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education took community feedback into account before placing the bond and mill levy questions on the November ballot to include 14 community forums April-June, seven formal public comment opportunities and the message heard was that neighborhood schools are an important asset to the Jeffco community; and,

WHEREAS, despite local increases in property tax revenue, Jeffco Public Schools sees no commensurate increase unless the state increases funding pre student statewide; and,

WHEREAS, Jeffco Public Schools has not received approximately $490 million which otherwise would have gone to educate and support Jeffco students with the implementation of the state’s ‘negative factor’ -making Colorado 40th in the nation in spending on public k-12 education; and,

WHEREAS, Jeffco Public Schools is falling behind metro area school districts and losing its competitive edge in retaining and attracting quality educators; and,

WHEREAS, Jeffco classrooms will benefit from additional funds for science, technology, engineering and math instruction to prepare today for the workforce of tomorrow -as well as interventions to support struggling students to succeed; and,

WHEREAS, the median age of Jeffco schools is 45 years; and,

WHEREAS, the local economy will benefit through the construction/update of school facilities; and,

WHEREAS, each school in the district will receive funds to improve, update or repair classrooms and school facilities; and,

WHEREAS, strong, successful communities invest in infrastructure to attract new businesses and families so that Jeffco Public Schools’ taxpayers-owned schools and education system improve local property values; and,

WHEREAS, the elected leaders of our community want every child to have a quality teacher, learning in a safe environment, and to be provided the instruction and skills necessary for success in college and the workplace.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED on this 6th day of October, 2016, that the Board of Directors of Apex Park and Recreation District supports Jeffco Public Schools” two initiatives and urges all District residents and Jefferson County voters to support the $33 million mill levy override and $535 million bond issue questions, 3A and 3B, on the November 8, 2016 general election ballot.
